Browse municipalities by projected population change

The indicator is projected population change (“how population may change”). We show examples from the relatively higher and lower ends of the national municipal distribution.

Indicator: How population is expected to change (IPSS: Regional population projections for Japan) / Period 2020→2050 / 1741 municipalities

Relatively smaller decline (including growth)

The relatively higher end of the change rate. Growing municipalities can appear. Results depend on projection assumptions.

Relatively larger decline

The relatively lower end (more negative). This does not declare “extinction” or good/bad outcomes.

How to read this list

  • Values are projected change rates based on sources such as IPSS Regional Population Projections for Japan.
  • If assumptions change, projections change. Policy and industry shifts are not built in.
  • Small municipalities can appear at both ends. Also check population size in the profile.
